Accommodation in CaracasEdit This
Caracas has many hotels but no youth hostels as one might expect to find in other South American countries. Backpackers will find that Caracas is not a cheap destination and that you will not find rooms in the 20-30 USD typical hostel range. While Caracas is considered to be a dangerous city, if you stay in the east, that is, from Sabana Grande to Los Palos Grandes, you will be fine.
Most hotels are in Sabana Grande, which is the geographic center of the city (midtown or new downtown). While the average Sabana Grande hotel rates range from $100 (***) to $400 (*****), you can find cheaper accomodations in the area. The Sabana Grande Boulevard has high-shining lamp posts and police officers all along the boulevard. Therefore, Sabana Grande, being a must-see place in Caracas, is pleasantly walkable, fantastic for people-watching and casual shopping. There are also large shopping malls around Sabana Grande, which are absolutely safe, especially one known as El Recreo, the largest one in the area. All this makes Sabana Grande the best place to stay for many. Neighborhoods further east or south such as Altamira and Las Mercedes also offer accommodations, but at a much increased cost.
