Cruises in Montevideo

Edit This

Montevideo has long been a hot spot for exotic South American Cruises. The Uruguayan capital is known for its savory wines, distinctive, historical architecture, and the tango. It has a beautiful landscape with long stretches of rolling hills and fields, as well as a gorgeous selection of beaches.

Cruises to this city are family friendly, with activities for the young as well as old. They give you a chance to see a side of South America that is not often explored by tourists. Most major cruise liners have ships that pass through Montevideo, here are just a few of the many options:

Holland America

Set sail on a 16 day cruise on the “ms Veendam”. This cruise begins in Santiago (Valparaiso) and travels through Puerto Montt, the Darwin Channel, the Amalia Glacier, the Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas, Ushuaia, Cape Horn, Port Stanley, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires. The final stop is in Rio de Janeiro. In Montevideo, there are various optional land excursions. You can go on a city tour through the downtown area as well as the old section of the city; you can also take a city tour focusing on the food and wine, or highlighting the architectural features of Montevideo. Another option is a day of work and experience in a countryside estate to see what a typical day in the life of a gaucho is like.

This cruise costs $1,879 USD per person for an interior room, $2,299 for an ocean view room, and $3,999 for a room with a verandah. Land excursions are not included. The ship has an atrium, a spa, a culinary art center, in addition to bars, restaurants, and youth facilities.

Crystal Cruises

The “Crystal Symphony” provides a 15 day cruise from Manaus to Buenos Aires stopping at Boca de Valeria, Santorem, Rio de Janeiro, and of course, Montevideo. $5,025 USD is the price of a deluxe stateroom, while a stateroom with a verandah costs $7,445.

A host of day trips in Montevideo are available, many being similar to those of Holland America. They include a city tour, a wine and food tour, an art tour, and a day on a working ranch among others.
