Arriving in the bus station, expect the regular touts to try to overcharge you for a taxi ride and tell you the hotel you ask for has changed names and charges 100 dollars. This is a good time to practice the pronounciation of 'chau chau' in Spanish. A taxi costs 2 soles -- anywhere you go within the city.

Do not trust the taxidrivers. They try to bring you to hotels that cost 100 dollar per night.They get provision for every tourist.Whe you ask for other hotel they say, "No good, very dangerous." And they say this to any question of an hotel that they get no provision from! Be alert!!

The large Royal Hotel offers pretty rooms with a wooden floor in an old colonial styled building. They have warm water all day. Rooms next to the street are pretty noisy but have a great view. Rooms at the inside of the building do have windows, but are still pretty dark. Prices are reasonable, especially considering it's central location and the -somewhat faded- beauty of the building.
