The city is at 2,335 meters above sea level giving it a very
pleasant climate. Chachapoyas was founded by Alonso De Alvarado on
September 5, 1538. Before colonial times, this was the land
of the ancient culture of the Chachapoyas. They were excellent
warriors, who built the fortress of Kuelap. The Inca conquered them
after many battles.
The city has been overlooked by modernisation, hence it still has most of it's colonial houses. White houses built around a big patio, with a lot of wooden finishing.
