Museo de Ayavaca
Edit ThisThe Museo de Ayavaca is free. They have a few archeological findings, nice photos, a whale head found in the desert and a replica of an ancient lord of the same culture as the Lord of Sipan. His hand always falls of.
The most important reason to visit the museum is that it`s the best place to get practical information about the province. Besides the mentioned Ruins of Aypate, there are two more archeological sites worth visiting: the petroglyphs of Samanga and the Altar at the Cerro Cuchallín.
Also for people who would like to visit the villages where Monterrico Metals are planning a mining project this place is indispensable. Their phonecall to tell them about your coming should prevent a public lynching. The mining company isn´t exactly welcome in these parts, and the association between gringo and minero is easily made by the humble campesinos. If you would like to know more about this conflict, check out www.vima.org.pe .
The museum is only half a quadra away from the Plaza Central. It´s on the second floor, and there is no notice on thedoor at the streetside. Just knock on the door next to the Internet Café untill someone opens up.
