There are a few interesting places to visit within town, and several things farther from town in the province of Ayabaca.

The main attraction on the Plaza Central is the church housing the Señor Cautivo. As the vendors outside the curch survive selling among other things photosof the señor, you can`t take pictures inside. The Señor itself is a beautiful piece of art, crafted by Ecuadorian craftsmen or angels.

Museo de Ayavaca

Edit This

The Museo de Ayavaca is free. They have a few archeological findings, nice photos, a whale head found in the desert and a replica of an ancient lord of the same culture as the Lord of Sipan. His hand always falls of.

The most important reason to visit the museum is that it`s the best place to get practical information about the province. Besides the mentioned Ruins of Aypate, there are two more archeological sites worth visiting: the petroglyphs of Samanga and the Altar at the Cerro more..

Aypate Inca Ruins

Edit This

The Aypata "Ceremonial Administrative Center" is a complex of Inca ruins an hours drive out of town. It is dated to the fifteenth century, and is made of the same material as Machu Pichu.

To get to the complex, you have to take a car and later on walk about 20 minutes uphill. Part of the walk is on an ancient Inca Trail. At the start of the path lives a family who offer a very basic place to spend the night.

Half an hour worth of walking out of town is the Cerro Yantuma. It’s a rolling hill, with a magnificent view over the whole area. The green pasture and the trees give it a very friendly feel. Starting at about 4 o’clock clouds start floating by, making it an almost spiritual place, ideal for a pick nick. The sunset can be tremendous here.

To get there, just follow the calle Caceras with the town hall behind you. Follow this road a kilometer or two, until you reach a very small village. Cross the plaza and follow the path between two more..
