Getting There

Edit This
Most travelers will arrive from Piura. There are direct busses from there to Ayabaca, taking at least six hours to travel about 200 kilometers. Las Vegas and Poderoso Cautivo run daily busses. A more comfortable and interesting way to travel is by car. First you can take a minibus to Sullana, a town in the Piura province (2 sol). In Sullana take a mototaxi to the terminal for Ayabaca (2 sol). Arrive in the early morning and you can get a car that drives up the mountain. It will be a white Toyota Corolla that won´t leave unless there are 5 passengers each paying 20 soles. If no passengers arrive, he should leave if he receives a total of 100 soles. This way you will be able to appreciate the ever-changing landscape more thoroughly.

To get back to Piura it´s recommendable to take the bus, as there aren´tmuch cars leaving, and they try to overcharge you. Busses leave at 8.30 am.

It is possible to go to Ayabaca directly from Ecuador.

If you´re in an adventurous mood, it is possible to get close enough to the nearby Huancabamba to walk there. This is only possible in the dry season though, and it might be a heavy strain as the air is thin and the hills are steep.
