Arequipa's market is big, colourful, buzzing and full of interest. However it's a den of pickpockets.

Be very careful if you go - and you shouldn't be put off going - and

1. try to go and stay in a fair sized group.

2. Don't take valuables, including cameras - beautiful photos won't help if your camera is nicked.

3. Don't think you're safe when you have left the market - they may follow you and jostle you about and spit on you to take your attention and you won't even know you are being robbed.

4. Don't take much money.

I usually avoid the first person on this site but here I am speaking from my own experience - and I'll never see those pictures!
