Things to Do in Ciudad del este

Edit This

Any trip to Paraguay should include a broad overview of Ciudad del Este things to do. Ciudad del Este is the second largest city in the country, with a population of nearly 400,000. The name of the city means "City of the East" in Spanish, and its position along the border of Brazil makes the title a natural fit. Although Ciudad del Este is a dangerous place for the ill informed, it can also be a beautiful and culturally enriching part of any trip to South America, if you're cautious.

Lago Republica

Inside of the city itself, the Lago Republica ("Republic Lake," in Spanish) is one of the few destinations for adventure seekers in Paraguay. This lake sports hiking trails and paths to walk and explore. It's in a beautiful setting, although it's surrounded by the rest of the city. Avoid the Lago Republica after sundown, as it can be a dangerous place for travelers at this time of day.

Iguassu Falls

Just outside of the city, travelers will find the Iguassu falls. These waterfalls are beautiful and are home to many outdoor activities, including hiking, biking and more. The falls are connected to the Itaipu dam, one of the most important elements of the Paraguayan economy and a connection to Brazil. Though the dam has been the source of some economic strife, the waterfalls there have helped to create are gorgeous and a worthwhile stop for any adventure-seeking tourist.

Las Cataratas

Las Cataratas are a few miles outside of town and are another set of wonderful waterfalls. These are naturally occurring falls, and the outdoor activities are slightly fewer in number than those available at the Itaipu dam. However, many people find these falls to be more gorgeous to view than the Iguassu falls.

When planning a trip to Paraguay in general, and particularly Ciudad del Este, it's important to excercise caution. This city is home to a thriving black market and plenty of illegal activities like smuggling and worse. The United States government has routinely inspected the area for signs of terrorist organizations. It's best to keep a low profile if you plan to travel to Ciudad del Este, and take all precautions needed to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable trip. Contact the Paraguayan tourist board for additional information and assistance in this matter.
