7 Day Itinerary in Guayaquil

Day 1: Malecon 2000 and Las Penas Neighborhood

Early morning: Enjoy a heavy breakfast because you'll  be doing a lot of walking today. Pack sunblock lotion, water, and a hat, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Morning to noon: Head to the Malecon 2000, the boardwalk overlooking the Guayas River. Several historical monuments can be seen along its 2.5 kilometer length, as well as museums, gardens, fountains, shopping malls, restaurants, bars, food courts, and the first IMAX theater in South America.

Noon: Book a daytime tour up and down the Guayas River at any of the several embarkations at the boarding docks.

After lunch: Head to Las Penas neighborhood, located on the northeast corner of Malecon 2000. This is the artistic centre of the city, where many of the 400 year old houses have been converted into art galleries with several notable artists have studios in the area.

Night: Relax at your hotel.

Day 2: Downtown

Early morning: Pack sunblock lotion, water, and a hat, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Morning: Head to Palacio Municipal (Mayor's House) and enjoy Guayaquil's architectural development ranging from the neoclassical to the modern. Visit nearby official buildings.

Afternoon: Visit the local parks filled with statues and monuments. Start with Parque Seminario (better known as Parque de las Iguanas) where you will find yourself surrounded by tons of iguanas. Make sure to head to the Parque Centenario, where a large Statue of Liberty (hard to miss!) dominates the central area of this park.

Day 3: Relax

You had 2 days full of walking around. Treat yourself to some R & R at your hotel. Ask the front desk for your hotel amenities. In the late afternoon, visit Mall del Sol for a great shopping and dining experience. Close to the airport, on Juan Tanca Marengo Avenue and Joaquin Orrantia.

Day 4: Parque Historico

Early morning: Pack sunblock lotion, water, and a hat, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Morning: Ask the front desk at your hotel on the best way to go to Parque Historico (Historic Park) located on the northern area of Guayaquil. You’ll find restored century-old buildings in the historical section of this newly built park, which also has a zoo and nature reserve.

Afternoon: Rest, because you're going out tonight.

Night: Hit the Zona Rosa nearby Malecon 2000 where you will find a great mix of bars, pubs, and restaurants. You can also experience Malecon 2000's pubs and bars that open only at night.

Day 5: Protected Forest Cerro Blanco and Travel Arrangements

Morning: A visit to Guayaquil wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Ruta del Sol (nickname of Ecuador's chain of beaches along its coast). Salinas is the most developed beach city in Ecuador and a popular destination that you can use as your headquarters to visit other nearby beaches. Ask your front desk for more details because some hotels have branches in Salinas.

Afternoon: Pack sunblock lotion, water, a hat, and wear comfortable hiking shoes. Head to the Protected Forest Cerro Blanco on Kilometer 16 at the Via a La Costa highway. This 6,078 hectares natural reservation is the home of near extinct species of primates and parrots. Here you have various choices of eco-tourism activities ranging from hikes (trails range from 1 to 4 hours) to birdwatching. Excellent for nature and photography enthusiasts.

Night: Rest at your hotel.

Days 6 and 7: Salinas

Head to Salinas beach, about 2 hours away from Guayaquil. With an average year-round temperature of 24 degrees C (80 degrees F) and its location on the Pacific Ocean, the beach of Salinas are popular resort destination in Ecuador. Beaches near Salinas include San Lorenzo, Las Palmeras, Chipipe, Mar Bravo, and Punta Carnero. Popular tourist activities in Salinas include game fishing, wake-boarding, water skiing, yachting, sky diving, and laying on the beach. The city offers a number of restaurants and cafes on its boardwalk, as well as artisan crafts markets.
