Esmeraldas is a coastal city in the most northern province (of the same name) in Ecuador. A booming port city with its own international sea port, this town has welcomed travelers for many years. The province and city of Esmeraldas have the majority of the Afro Ecuadorian population of the country, making Esmeraldas a city with unique culture and customs. Therefore, a visit to Ecuador wouldn't be complete without a visit to Esmeraldas.

Where to go

A popular place to start your visit in Esmeraldas is the archaeological zone called "La Tolita". "La Tolita" is a small island that is a 20 minute boat ride away from Esmeraldas. There is a lot of speculation about the history of the zone. Some archaeologists argue that it was a great ceremonial center where people from around the region travelled to make gold and clay offerings, while other archaeologists believe that this island was a secret workshop where gold, silver and platinum where worked in secrecy by master craftsmen. Regardless of which version is true, there is no doubt that "La Tolita" is a true archaeological treasure, rich with historical artifacts. It's important to point out that this archeological site has first made available to the public in the 90s, so don't miss the experience!

What to eat

Typical meals include different variations of seafood and plantains. Makes sure the "encocado" fish, (literally translated as coconut fish) which is prepared with coconut sauce and is a local favorite. Fresh seafood and fresh coconuts makes this dish a staple of Esmeraldas. The fish used in the "encocado" fish is corvina (a type of sea bass). There are other variations of the "encocado" fish that use other seafood such as shrimp, clams, crab or squid. Other popular dishes from Esmeraldas are "tapao" fish with plantains, patacones (smashed, deep fried plantains) and bolon de verde (deep fried balls of smashed plantain with cheese or bacon filling).

Where to stay

El Acantilado is a popular place to stay for local families with children. It is a humble place but very comfortable and with easy beach access to sandy beaches with calm surf. A great option for those travelling on a budget and looking for just the bare necessities. There are plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance from this hotel. Some of the cottages of the El Acantilado have ocean view. Another good option for those on a budget is the Hostal Chavalito in the Malecon del Rio Atacames (boardwalk near the Atacames river). This hostal offers clean, affordable rooms nearby the beach. Just like with El Acantilado, there are several restaurants, shops and bars within walking distance.
