Getting There
Edit This
Flights from Quito are frequent and relatively inexpensive, though
the tiny Fokkers used for this route can lead to a less than smooth
flight. Flights can also be found from Guayaquil and Cuenca,
though those often involve a stop in Quito en route to Coca.
The bus route between Coca and Quito is long and can be very cold at
night, though the views as you ascend from the rainforest up into the
cordillera are breathtaking. Also be aware that you pass through
several military checkpoints on this bus route; your passport will
be checked and you may be patted down by uniformed military
police. In my experience most women were spared the full search,
but all men, local or tourist, were required to "spread 'em" against
the bus.
