Santa Marta sights include museums, beaches, monuments and parks. The city is located to the north of Colombia. It is near the
Caribbean Sea and mountain ranges. The city has a port. Santa Marta is
an important historical and cultural center. Tourism forms a significant
part of the economy.
Cathedral of Santa Marta
The cathedral is situated between Calles and Carrera. It was constructed soon after the city was founded. The outside of the building is white washed. The cathedral has a bell tower and the chapel is adorned with marble. Inside the chapel, visitors can see the Virgin statue, which belonged to the founders. On the chapel grounds is the grave of Rodrigo de Bastidas. It is also the burial place of Bishop Celendon.
Museo de Ora Tairona
This museum offers a glimpse into the lives of the Tayrona people. Information on the culture of the Tairona culture is provided. Visitors can view a model of the Lost City. Gold artifacts are kept in the vault. The museum is located on Calle. There are free guided tours in English. The museum is open Monday to Saturday.
Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino
Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino was built in 1608. It is located 5 kms from the city. The area around the manor was previously used to grow sugar cane. Simon Bolivar died in the manor in 1830.The manor has been restored and visitors can view items that belonged to Simon Bolivar. Other attractions include the Altar de la Patria monument and botanical gardens. The gardens are a peaceful place to go for a stroll. For a fee, visitors can hire a guide. There is an admission fee with discounts for children and students. It is open every day.
Tayrona Park
Inside the park are beautiful sandy beaches lined with coconut trees. The beaches are a good place to go snorkeling and swimming. There are good views of the sunrise. The area does not have any facilities for visitors. Activities include trekking through the forest and horse riding.
Cultural Center San Juan Nepomuceno
At the cultural center you can learn more about Colombian culture. Visitors can view the art displays. There is a bookstore which also hosts literary readings. The center is a venue for a variety of events and sometimes these events are free. Movies are screened on Tuesdays.
