There are several hostels and lower price hotels in Medellin. Hostel prices start from $18.000 COP ($9 USD) for a bed in a dorm, from $50.000 COP ($25 USD) for a private room with a shared bathroom, and from $70.000 COP ($35 USD) for a private room with a bathroom. The hostels here require a reservation, so make sure to call well in advance of your trip. There are 9 motels in Medellin. They are lower priced than hotels, from $140.000 COP ($70 USD) per night. Their prices vary with the seasons, so make sure to reserve early.

Hiking

There are several parks in and around Medellin. A local favorite is El Volador, where you can get a 360-degree view of the city. This national preserve is also home to a training facility for the army, so you can feel safe relaxing away from it all.

Parque Bolivar

Another favorite is Parque Bolivar. You can sit and relax in the shade while watching the world go by. There is a free concert on Sunday mornings, and on the first Saturday of the month the park transforms into a craft and antique market. Make sure you leave before dusk as the area is not too safe after dark.

Swimming

Parque de las Aguas is the perfect place to be a kid at heart. This water park offers several water slides, a slow river and wave pool. Admission costs $8.000 COP ($4 USD). There are 2 other water parks in town, the Juan Pablo II and the Los Tamarindos. They offer pretty much the same amenities but are more crowded and the waiting lines are longer.

Sports

If you like sports, Parque Trebol is the place for you because it offers paintball, a rock climbing wall, an obstacle route, the X-Fera course (you are inside a huge sphere and must navigate the course), and the Canopy (slide on a cable at 17 meters above the ground). Each activity is priced separately but compared to prices in the United States, they are still very affordable.

Groceries

Purchasing food from the grocery store is still the most economical option. The Euro chain offers the lowest prices for day to day groceries.
