One of the best things to do in the city is to visit the miradores, which is located on the highlands of Punta Arenas. There are two miradores or city parks: Cerro Mirador and Mirador de los Sonadores. These provide views of Punta Arenas, right to the Straits, pass the Estrecho de Magallanes and to the land of Tierra del Fuego. The first mirador is situated on Calle Senoret, and the other is on the Avenida Colon median. Visitors can also watch ships sailing icy waters from these points. Both city parks are about a 15-minute walk from downtown Punta Arenas.
Another popular tourist attraction in Punta Arenas is the Magdalena Island, which is located about 35 km towards the northeast of Punta Arenas. This island makes up one of the largest penguin colonies in Southern Chile, along the isle of Marta. Together, the two islands draw thousands of tourists to observe more than 100,000 penguins in their natural habitat. Tourists can find excursions to these small islands which are located in the Strait of Magellan from November to February. Some lucky tourists may also get a chance to see Southern sea lions and whales on these tours.
Pali Aike National Park
If you don’t mind a little additional traveling for a spectacular sight, the Pali Aike National Park is a wonderful place to visit. Located around 200 km from Punta Arenas, this 5,000-hectare park offers lunar landscapes and barren beauty. The park is characterized by caves, volcanic craters and basalt that cover it. Visitors will find numerous hiking trails through the rocky terrain. The park is also home to pumas, foxes, armadillos, waterfowl and herds of guanacos. As it is not visited often, there is not much public transport to the park. Tourists who want to visit it can book a tour or hire a car from Punta Arenas.
Magallanese National Reserve
Visitors who are looking for a more picturesque thing to do in Punta Arenas must visit the Magallanese National Reserve. It is situated just 15 minutes from the west of downtown Punta Arenas. This is a 32-acre reserve where nature lovers can see some of the best flora and fauna belonging to Patagonia. The reserve includes two trails: a mountain bike circuit and one for hiking access. Magallanese National Reserve is home to unique animal species like condor, puma, Culpeo fox, and gray fox. You can also find numerous lenga and coigue trees here. The place is also popular for camping.
