Isla Fresia, Lago Puyehue

Chile is a very long skinny country which causes it to have many distinct parts. The Lake District is absolutely beautiful and very unique. The mountains and lakes give it a very relaxing and non-touristy atmosphere. There are howeever many fantastic experiences to be had. There is an absolutely amazing active volcano to summit as well as some invigorating and challenging whitewater rafting to enjoy. I highly recommend that you spend some time in this area of an all together wonderful country that is slowly being discovered by tourists.

The lake district can be iether accesed from Santiago Chile to the north or from Argentina to the east. The main backpacker city in the region is Pucon where you can find all the tourist atractions (including climbing the Villarica volcano), but the largest city in the region is Port Mont (check out the fish market).

However the best part of this region is the smaller places, I would recomend renting a car and dedicating at least a week to explore some of the smaller towns of the district. Specificaly dont miss out on Hornopiren - its a bit tricky to get there (you will need to take a ferry 15 KM east of Port Mont and then drive 40 KM on a dirt road) but this secluded town is as good as small town Chile gets
