Parque Lage Mansion

Marc D. Berger

The "Parque Enrique Lage" is a public park in the southern zone (Zona Sul)of Rio de Janeiro, located in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood beside the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, directly at the foot of the Corcovado mountain with the Cristo Redentor statue on its top.

The land was formerly the residence of industrialist Enrique Lage and his wife, singer Gabriela Bezanzoni. During the 1920's Lage had the mansion remodeled by Italian architect Mario Vodrel, with interior paintings by Salvador Payols Sabaté.

In the 1960's the land became a public park, with walking trails through subtropical forest. There is a pound, a little castle, that is often used by globo TV as a fairy tale background, a vantage point giving you an amazing and uncommon view over the lagoon til Ipanema and rest of the old coffee plantation.

The main mansion is nowadays home to The Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (Visual Arts School of Parque Lage). A romantic café is open to the public. The spirit of art in combination with the beautiful architecture of the mansion and the view up to Cristo Redentor is amazing.

The place is very secure. There is a guard at the entrance and another circulating inside the park. You can easily go there by taxi, bus or car. A parking lot is available inside. No fee is covered!
