Pe de Boi

I fell in love with this store at first glance, especially this big piece I saw parked against one of the walls: a huge leopard climbing a log, and I just had to have it. I didn't think I'd be able to buy it, since there was absolutely no chance I could take it back home with me due to its size. Fortunately, upon noticing my interest in the piece, she told me that they shipped internationally if necessary. I went through with it and the piece came through intact. Everyone who sees it in my living room looks at it intrigued and asks about it.

Brasil & Cia

Brasil & Cia is a local craft/Brazilian art store in the heart of Ipanema, very close to the beach, in Rio de Janeiro. Everybody knows how rich of art and culture Brazil is, but the weird thing is that is very difficult to find a decent store, with no-cheesy stuff to buy for nice prices. Brazil & Cia products are selected among the largest crafts and popular art centers in Brazil. They have typical popular art objects that reflect important aspects of the local culture. Makes you wanna buy it all, for your home and as souvenirs for relatives and friends.

Loja Garota de Ipanema

Fair warning to all girls coming from anywhere outside Brazil: upon reaching the country, BUY YOURSELF A NEW PAIR OF BIKINIS! There´s a store in Ipanema called Garota de Ipanema (yeah, like the tune) and besides other beach gear, they´ve got the best looking bikinis. My friend and I spent a good couple of hours in there deciding what to get. I ended up with two pairs... she got three! These babies will make you look hot at the beach and give you the proper tan.

BarraShopping

BarraShopping is a large mall located in Barra da Tijuca, minutes from Zona Sul. The mall contains tons of shops.

If the cinema is what you're after, the New York City Center that connects to the mall has a wonderful large movie theatre.

The food court in the mall is a must.

Rio de janeiro

Located close to Botafogo Beach and beside the tunnel that leads to Copacabana, is Rio's most traditional shopping. You'll find there anything you're looking for.
The shopping also offers a bus that takes you to the Metro (subway) Cardeal Arcoverde Station, and vice versa, for free.

Modern Sound

This is a great music store located in Copacabana. Brazil is a haven for low-quality pirated CD's and DVD's so the legitimate record shops have suffered. This one has stayed the course however and boasts an encyclopedic collection.

Music and Magic you can find at the Northeastern Market. It is located at Campo de Sao Cristovao. Open on Sundays all day long. Take the bus 472 or 474 from the Centre or the Copacabana respectively.

Feirarte I

This handicraft market takes place every Sunday. Most Cariocas (people of Rio) call it the Feira Hippie. Guess why? It is located at Praca Gen Osorio, Ipanema.

Garota de Ipanema

Okay, I'm a guy, but I'm quite thankful for this store. Why? Because they know how to make real bikinis for girls, unlike the ones we get back home (U.S.A.). I walked in with my girlfriend who wanted to get one, and while I was a bit apprehensive at first (seeing as they were smaller than what I'm used to seeing on girls), I had to approve after seeing the positive results throughout. Very highly recommended!
