Things to do in Porto Alegre

Edit This

If adventure is what you're seeking, Porto Alegre will be more than happy to cater to your needs. Known for it's bustling nightlife and scenic beaches, Porto Alegre has a number of outdoor activities that appeal to tourists that seek not only the beauty of nature, but an adrenaline rush as well.

Serra Gaucha Mountains

Just north of Porto Alegre lies a series of stunning foothills that gradually get larger and larger to form the Serra Gaucha mountain range. Hiking through these foothills is not an adventure you will want to miss out on. Viewing the gorgeous scenery of the mountain range and the city of Porto Alegre are well worth the hike. The most popular hikes are on Morro do Osso (Osso Hill), Morro Sao Pedro (Sao Pedro Hill) and Morro Santa Teresa (Santa Teresa Hill). The best time of the year to hike these mountains is in the summer. Temperatures are moderate and the elevation gives tourists and locals a nice break away from the heat and humidity. Hiking in any other season, particularly winter, increases the risk that you will run into snow.

Parque Nacional de Aparados da Serra

If you have the time, a short trip twenty-five miles north to the Parque Nacional de Aparados da Serra is a must. This stunning national park is home to over sixty magnificent canyons as well as beautiful waterfalls and tropical vegetation. A trip to this national park costs six dollars for the day but is well worth this small price. There are a number of hikes throughout the park ranging from a short one mile trek to a longer eleven mile hike. Perfect for people of all ages with a wide range of physical abilities, this scenic wonder is not one you will want to miss out on.

For a true adventure seeker, snorkeling or diving in the tropic waters of Brazil is an experience of a lifetime. Diving of any kind requires you to pass the standard scuba diving certification test which involves classes and professional training to ensure no danger comes to you. Snorkeling doesn't require any training and still gives you the treat of seeing the remarkable underwater vegetation and sea life. There are a number of equipment rental shops located along the coastline to purchase or rent your equipment for an afternoon of enjoyment.
