Nova Friburgo is a mountain resort some 2 hours by bus from
Rio de Janeiro with a peculiar charm. The town was established by Swiss emigrants in the beginning of the 19-th century and is a curious mixture of Central European style buildings and a Brazilian lifestyle.
From the Morro da Cruz you have great views over the surrounding area. The cable car station is in the centre of town.
The area is also great for hiking, There are trails to the Pedra do Cao Sentado and the Furnas do Catete rock formations.
Lumiar, another popular mountain resort, is nearby. Lumiar is moslty popular with hippies and fans of white water rafting.
