Day Trips in Fortaleza

Edit This
With its buzzing nightlife and bountiful beaches, the city of Fortaleza has plenty to offer the visitor. But when the sun beats down and the city streets throng with people, visitors may want to hit the road and head for more rural spots where the arid heat feels a little less stifling. Luckily for those looking to spend a few hours outside the city limits, Fortaleza is surrounded by countless natural beauty spots. The city lies along the stunning Ceara coast, which is studded with idyllic beaches, rural retreats, and rustic fishing villages. Although many former beauty spots have now been somewhat spoiled by tourism and over-development, there are still some treasures to be found. A hire car can be a good way to get off the beaten track and explore some of the more untouched beaches - but be aware that many roads are unpaved and Brazilian drivers are not the most cautious in the world!

West of Fortaleza

Heading west of Fortaleza, visitors will find some truly breathtaking beaches, backed by absolutely enormous sand dunes that have become a tourist attraction in their own rights. Less than 60 kilometers from Fortaleza, the fishing village of Pecem is a popular spot with surfers and has a good beach and impressive dunes, as well as plenty of rural charm. Travelers looking to get a little further off the beaten track should consider a trip to Trairi, which lies around 130 kilometers from Fortaleza. The little town is surrounded by beautiful beaches and lagoons, many of which are ideal for snorkelling and diving. The once-beautiful town of Jericoacoara, meanwhile, is easily reached by bus but an influx of tourists has taken its toll on the area's natural beauty.

East of Fortaleza

The eastern Ceara coast is home to lots of small town and villages, many of which make pleasant spots for a day away from the city. Cascavel, around 60 kilometers from Fortaleza, is worth a visit for the Sunday crafts fair, which is a great place to pick up keepsakes and gifts for those back home. There are some good beaches close to the town, and it is a pleasant half-hour walk to Aguas Belas, with some wonderfully cooling natural pools. Other notable spots on the eastern coast include Beberibe, around 80 kilometers from Fortaleza, and Prainha do Canto Verde, which has a good eco-tourism scene. Most spots along the coast offer camping opportunities or, at the very least, space to hang a hammock.

My wife and I would like to go to pecem, visit its beach and this former jangadairo village. We will be able to go either on Saturday, 28th, or on Monday, 30th. How much this trip would cost? Thank you, Darko
