Situated in the Northeast corner of the country, Fortaleza is the capital of the state of Ceara, the first state in the country to abolish slavery. With a name meaning "fortress" the city has long been associated  with protecting the northern area of coastline since the first arrival by the Portuguese in 1603. After much fighting over land, prosperity came to the area in the early 19th century as the city became a major port for the region. Today 2 million people live in the city that boats many beautiful fantastic beaches and one of the major commercial centers of Brazil. The thriving city offers many interesting things to do and see.
