When to Go in Florianopolis

Edit This
Florianopolis’ subtropical climate is ideal, as there are no weather extremes at any point throughout the year. At its warmest, January through March, high temperatures average in the mid to lower 80s while low temperatures average at about 70 degrees F. This is the time that Floripa, as the locals call it, is the most crowded with Brazilians and Argentinians flooding the beaches for summer vacation.

With little variation in temperature, Florianopolis has a lovely climate for tourism all year long. During the winter months of May through August, high temperatures remain in the mid 70s with lows in the 50s. It is this lack of extremes that has allowed for Florianopolis to thrive as a popular tourist location. March, April and May are  especially nice times to visit the island, as there is little tourist traffic at this time and the weather is still quite nice.

There is no particular wet season, and rainfall is spread evenly throughout the year. During the wettest period of the year, in the summer months of January through March, rainfall totals about 7 inches monthly. The driest month is typically June where there is an average of 3 inches of rainfall. Most other months average about 5 inches of rainfall. This amount of rain throughout the year allows for the lush green vegetation on the mountains around the area to thrive year-round.

If you are visiting Floripa to surf, June and July are the best months, as big swells hit the coast at this time. For windsurfers and kitesurfers, August through November is ideal, as there is a steady wind during these months.

The high tourist season brings with it higher prices. Typically, beginning the day before Christmas and not ending until after Carnival (around the end of February) everything on the island is festive and beaches, bars, restaurants and hotels are all filled to capacity. During this time, there are numerous international DJs and Brazilian celebrities that pass through the club scene. New Year's and Carnival are the most crowded times of the year.

Toward the end of October, the WCT Pro Surf Tour kicks off--which brings with it loads of fans, surfers and performers. During this time the nightlife is particularly vibrant and the island is quite crowded.
