Belo Horizonte is a great place to spend your vacation. The city is really quite new, having been planned and built in the late 19th century to be the capitol of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It was built using the American capitol of Washington D.C. as a model. The city is filled with some great shopping centers, markets, museums and interesting buildings to check out during your time there. The name Belo Horizonte means "beautiful horizon," and some of the views in this capitol city certainly live up to the name.

Parque Municipal

Located right in the center of downtown Belo Horizonte, the Parque Municipal should definitely go on your list of things to see during your stay. With plenty of room, benches to sit on and some very nice little lakes and canals to see, this is a great place to relax or take a morning or mid-day stroll. On Sundays the nearby Ave. Afonso Pena turns into a giant street fair, where you can buy everything from clothes to art to pottery and toys.

Alta Vila Tower

You can accomplish a lot with a trip to the Alta Vila Tower. To start with, the tower is a sight unto itself, a worthy photo opportunity and a landmark of the city. If you climb to the top of the tower, you will get a beautiful panoramic view of Belo Horizonte. And finally, surrounding the tower is the Alta Vila Shopping Mall, featuring numerous stores, the Hard Rock Cafe Belo Horizonte and a movie theater. The Alta Vila Tower is located in the Belvedere neighborhood.

Pampulah

This classic neighborhood is one of the most picturesque and important in Belo Horizonte. It shares its name with the artificial lagoon inside its borders, and is home to some of the most beautiful architecture and most important cultural artifacts of the city. Located inside Pampulah are the Museum of Modern Art, the Church of Sao Francisco and the football stadium Minerirao.

Parqu das Mangabeiras

One of the largest urban parks in the country, when you visit the Parqu das Mangabeiras you almost feel like you're leaving the city. Stop by the visitor center for some information if you're not a wanderer. The park is mostly forest, but it's so large that you can find pretty much anything you're looking for if you just keep walking. There some great wildlife and vegetation, and the comfort of knowing that not too far around the bend is a place to use the restroom or buy a cold soda before continuing on.
