Museums in Belo horizonteEdit This
Belo Horizonte, literally meaning "Beautiful Horizon" is a very spacious, beautiful city in the heart of Brazil. The capitol of the up-scale state of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte has one of the highest standards of living in the country. Despite the fact the city is very new, having been planned and built towards the end of the 19th century, it has a number of great museums documenting the history and culture of the city, the state of Minas Gerais and Brazil itself.
Museo Historico Abilio Barreto
The Museo Historico Abilio Barreto is the museum of choice if you want to learn about the history of Belo Horizonte. Although fairly modern, it is quite interesting. The city was planned and built on the same grid system as Washington, D.C., and a lot of hard work and expertise went into its planning. The Museum documents this with photographs, blueprints and more to give you an accurate idea of how Belo Horizonte came to be.
Museu De Artes E Oficios
Located in what used to be the central train station of Belo Horizonte, the Museum of Arts and Crafts is a great place to visit. It shows the rich culture of Brazilian art, highlighting particularly the pre-industrial and traditional work of Brazilian artists. Another bonus: admission is free on Saturdays.
Museu De Ciencias Naturais
For nature lovers, this museum focuses on the natural habitat and wildlife of the Minas Gerais region, from the forests to the oceans. Located near the PUC campus, the Museu De Ciencias Naturais is also a great place to bring kids.
