When to Go in Washington D.C.

Edit This
The Nation's capital is one of the top destinations in North America all year round because of its rich history, great location and amicable Washingtonians.

Winter, What Winter?

D.C. is a city with a humid subtropical weather, typical of mid Atlantic U.S. cities nearby bodies of water with four very well defined seasons. This humid subtropical climate allows D.C. to still be a great destination during the winter months because average winter low temperatures are around 30 degrees F (-1 degrees C) which are very mild for the Northeastern region of the United States. Be aware that a blizzard can hit this city every 4 to 6 years.

If you're looking for a specific time to visit during the winter months there is no better time than the last week of March and the first week of April during the National Cherry Blossom Festival! Every year this festival celebrates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of the city of Tokyo to the city of Washington, D.C. This beautiful gift reminds Washingtonians and visitors to Washington about the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan. When heading towards the cherry blossoms, it's highly recommended that you use public transportation. The Smithsonian Metrorail Station (both the Blue and Orange Lines) is most popular among the National Cherry Blossom Festival visitors. Even though the following station, L'Enfant Plaza Station (Blue, Yellow, and Green Lines) at the 7th Street & Maryland Avenue exit, is about an extra 10 minute walk to the blossoms, we highly recommend it because it offers a far less crowded view of the cherry blossoms.

Bring on the Summer!

Summers in D.C. are not only hot in temperature, but also in major concert tours from mainstream musicians that hit the city. Daily high temperatures in the summer months average around 80 degrees F (about 30 degrees C), which is hot but still manageable.

If you're looking for a specific time to visit Washington, D.C. during the summer months, look no further that the 4th of July! This is the biggest celebration in the United States, this is the Independence Day nonetheless, so what better place to celebrate it than in the capital of the United States! The Washington Mall area is the place to be during this celebration. Make sure to get there early because people from around the world come here to party, enjoy some outdoor grilling and the major firework show at night. Don't let anybody tell you about the best firework show in the United States, come live it right here, only in the city of Washington, D.C.
