Surfing at Half Moon Bay

Surfing at Half Moon Bay

Matt Woodward

Two hours from Seattle and minutes by ferry from Ocean Shores stands Westport.  When the ferry isn't running, you're in for a half-hour drive around Grays Harbor.

Westport was once known as the Salmon Capitol of the world.  While the boats still leave the harbor in search of Salmon, Cod, Rockfish and Tuna, Westport has more to offer than just fishing.

Westport is the gateway to 18 miles of sand beaches which provide the typical beach activities.  The north end of the South Beach area is in the city of Westport, and provides surf breaks both at Half Moon Bay and the South Jetty.  The Washington State Parks in the Westport area provide miles of beach access and a paved trail leading from Ocean Avenue into the marina area of Westport.

On Ocean Avenue is the Westport Light.  The lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast.  Tours of the lighthouse are available.

At the Southern end of South Beach, lies the inlet to Willapa Bay and the town of Tokeland.  The entry of the bay is an area that has seen massive erosion by the ocean, which continues today.  Tokeland is protected by the local geography and is often 10 to 15 degrees warmer than the rest of south beach.

Between Tokeland and Westport is Grayland.  Grayland is known for its cranberry bogs.  The cranberries are typically harvested during the month of October.  The harvest is accompanied by an annual festival marking the harvest.
