Virginia is also home to Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America. Jamestown was founded in 1607 and was the site of the first representative government in America. Today, Jamestown island is a National Park, open year round to the public, and located nearby is Jamestown Settlement. Visitors are welcome to visit the Settlement and explore recreations of the Jamestown fort, the three ships that sailed from England and a Powahatan Indian village.
