Wendover Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and seeWendover is a small community located in an incredibly desolate and wonderfully bleak area. Right on the edge of the Great Salt Lake Desert, Wendover's primary claim to fame is its proximity to Wendover, Nevada, the first casino town that the lonely highway traveler encounters after leaving Utah.
But there's more to this region than slot machines. The salt flats are one of the most intriguing landscapes in North America, and home to the sport of extreme high speed racing. Many land speed records have been set on the white expanses of salt.
Nearby Pilot Peak was a landmark for travelers in the 19th century, and the ill-fated Donner Party passed through the area in 1846. Pilot Peak is one of the tallest mountains in terms of its height (over 10,000 feet) above the surrounding terrain. Hikers and climbers are welcome since the mountain is on Bureau of Land Management public lands.
More recently, the military established an air base for bomber training in world war II, and the nearby deserts are still home to training ranges for military aircraft.
