Shopping in Salt Lake City

Edit This
Salt Lake City has a wide variety of stores and shopping experiences. Everything from huge sprawling indoor malls (the indoor mall was invented here, with Cottonwood Mall being the first back in the early 60s) to independent and funky boutiques, secondhand, and offbeat sort of shops. Check out Trolley Square, the former Salt Lake Light and Rail car barns which once housed the city's streetcars. Now the old car barns are filled with trendy shops and restaurants. Lots of interesting shops of varied diversity are also located up and down State Street, old US-89. Everything from Mexican boot shops to secondhand fashion and exotic car dealerships can be found here. Plan on driving; the valley is a big region and a car is needed, although excellent light rail and bus service exists in the area.

Crossroads Plaza

Once the center of downtown life, Crossroads Plaza was demolished in 2007. This was a fantastic shopping center but it's now a fading memory. Legend has it that the Mormon Church now owns the land, and will create something with it in the near future, something that will tie in with Temple Square to the north. Meanwhile, a gaping wound remains in the downtown fabric. Crossroads, we'll miss you.
