Kerrville Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and seeKerrville is the "Heart of the Hill Country", and is 65 miles northwest of San Antonio, via I-10, and is a ninety minute drive to Austin.
A wide variety of accommodations are easily found off I-10, exit 505. Resort Hotels, full service properties, quaint bed and breakfasts and rv/campgrounds are easy to find, with something for every price range.
Kerrville's mainstay is the scenic Guadalupe River, that wends its way through the city and west through the small towns of Ingram and Hunt. A wide variety of restaurants are on the river; most of them non-chain restaurants. Whether it is home cookin', bbq, or fine dining, (even Starbucks!), you'll find a place for an enjoyable meal overlooking the river. Throughout town are other fine dining establishments, including Mamacita's (Mexican), Francisco's (Italian) or Cowboy Steak House.
Culture is alive and well in Kerrville, and great emphasis is placed on the arts. Galleries, museums and theatre are all right in the downtown area. Kerr Arts & Cultural Center (free), offers up different exhibitions throughout the year. Close to downtown is the Museum of Western Art, dedicated to the preservation of the western heritage. This venue is quite impressive, considering the size of Kerrville, and a "don't miss"....especially if you have youngsters....they'll love the "Journey's West" pavilion with hands-on fun - climb into a covered wagon, peer into supply chests, explore a Teepee and more.
The Hill Country is famous for exotic animals, and a short drive into the hills will no doubt lead you to a field where you can spot some elk, axis deer, emus or more.
For nature lovers, explore the Riverside Nature Center downtown. For history lovers there is the Hill Country Museum (open select hours). And a Shooting Center for sporting enthusiasts.
Summer camps abound in the adjacent areas of Kerrville, and for many it is a family legacy to send their child to these camps. So summertime weekends may find accommodations a bit scarce; we recommend you call ahead.
Kerrville is an easy drive to Fredericksburg, the German settlement with hundreds of antique, gift, and art shops, or to nearby Lady Bird Johnson Park or Luckenbach. Bandera, the "cowboy capital of the world" is a short drive as well.
