Blue Bell Creamery
The Blue Bell Creamery is located in Brenham, Texas. It's about an hour and a half away from Houston and most certainly worth the drive. While at the Blue Bell Creamery, one of three in the country, you can tour the facility that has been making delicious diary products since 1907. A short video about the factory and a guided tour is offered. Admission to the creamery will cost you $3. There are no tours on weekends and the duration of the tour is 45 minutes. Tours start at 10:00 am and last until 2:30 pm, but get there as soon as you can because only the first 800 people are allowed in throughout the day. There is a free ice cream treat at the end of the tour. It's a delicious way to end the day and will leave you wanting to buy a pint for the drive back to Houston. Everyone will enjoy this special day trip, but families with small children will especially have a blast.
If you're feeling a little confined by the city take a trip to Lake Conroe. It's an easy hour drive north and the fun that awaits you will help ease the drive. While at Lake Conroe visitors can boat, fish, and swim. Tour boats also operate on Lake Conroe. The lake is a great place to relax and enjoy some quality time with friends or family. Finish your day at Lake Conroe by exploring the actual town of Conroe. Here you will find a fabulous outlet mall and several antique shops full of historical treasures. Grab dinner at Margarita & Peppers before you head back to the city. Skip the margarita, but definitely explore the Mexican cuisine. It's a nice way to wind down after a day in the sun at Lake Conroe.
George Ranch Historical Park
The George Ranch Historical Park is located 45 minutes outside of Houston. The ranch is actually a former working farm and now serves as a way to educate visitors on Texan history. Visitors can explore several buildings from the 1800s and can ask workers for historical explanations and demonstrations. Tours are also avaible and recommended so you can get every ounce of infromation out of your visit to George Ranch Historical Park. Tours operate on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. This day-trip will last about 3 to 4 hours. It's a great way for guest to enjoy a taste of Texas history and just how a ranch worked. Walking here may be a bit difficult for seniors.
