Harker Heights Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and seeHarker Heights is a little town in the middle of nowhere keeping a secret that is not known to anyone outside of the surrounding area.
Thanks to a history of "dry laws" in Texas, Harker heights has a buttload of bars and clubs designed for partying.
It built this collection over 50 years as being the only place that allowed wild partying in the area between Austin and Dallas.
The real reason why Harker Heights is exceptional considering its location and size is it was the only town that allowed and encouraged the establishment of clubs, bars Etc. to server the party needs of Ft. Hood one of the largest military bases in the nation.
An example of how "out of the ordinary" Harker Heights is, is it even has a gay bar. Something that does not happen in towns like this. I mention this as an example of how Harker Heights is a small island of tolerance in the vast wasteland of religious fundamentalism that separates Dallas and Austin. It's like an oasis in the desert for partying. And like an oasis, it provides welcome relief from the party desert around it.
Of course being "party central" for Fort Hood is also the reason no one knows much about it. Even people a few miles from the town don't know anything about it or what's here. It's considered just a drab "military town." That it may be, but as a party area, its pretty incredible.
If you want to meet soldier boys, this is the place in Central Texas. They are EVERYWHERE. What's more the cops are very friendly relative to the redneck types that stop you for any and everything. They have to be, since people come from Ft. Hood to party, and it is the business mainstay.
So if you want to experience the hardcore party scene stripped of the pretty stuff that is characteristic of larger, well-known party places like Austin, come to Harker Heights. It's strip is easy to get to and all located on Bus. Loop 190 also called Veterans Memorial Hwy.
Recently the larger town it borders, Killeen TX loosened up it's drinking and partying laws, and allowed several big clubs to open up. Which means there is even more places to club and party, and all in a very small area.
Check it out, slum have fun.
