Deadwood as seen from Boot Hill Cemetary

Joseph Hollick

The town of Deadwood, South Dakota started out as a gold town with the gold rush in 1876. Also in 1876 Wild Bill Hickok was shot in Deadwood and was buried in Boot Hill Cemetary which overlooks the town. When Clamity Jane passed away in 1904, she was buried beside Bill.

The gold rush is long gone and now the town has 80 small casinos to carry on the gambling tradition from the gold rush days.

Deadwood is located not too far from Mt. Rushmore and is worth a visit.
