Sunriver Travel Guide

Sunriver, Oregon is a 3,300 acre (13.4 km²) private planned community in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Bend, Oregon Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the eastern flank of the Deschutes River about 15 miles (25 km) south of Bend at the base of the Cascade Range. Sunriver consists of residential areas, recreational facilities, the Sunriver Resort and commercial development. It has a permanent population of about 1700; though at any given time it may have several times that number of vacationers staying there. Visitors rent privately owned single family homes or condominiums, or stay at the Sunriver Resort Lodge. Among the amenities, Sunriver has two golf courses, many tennis courts, several swimming pools, a park, a nature center, an observatory, stables, a marina, a general aviation airport, restaurants, a business park, the Three Rivers School and a shopping village all accessible via the 35+ miles (over 55 km) of paved bicycle paths. Mount Bachelor and its ski area are also close by (20-30 minutes) and are frequent destinations for winter guests.

Sunriver is located on the grounds of Camp Abbot, a World War II training facility designed to train combat engineers in a simulated combat environment. By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed. The Officers Mess has been preserved and renovated and is now known as the Great Hall under management of Sunriver Resort. The name Sunriver was selected by developers John Gray and Donald V. McCallum. Condominiums were built in 1968 in conjunction with the completion of Sunriver Lodge, and in 1969, the master plan was completed and developers began selling lots.
