Oxford is the quintessential American college town. Oxford is located in Southwest Ohio between the Dayton and Cincinnati Metropolitan areas. While the surrounding area is largely rural, Miami University- a "public-ivy" or "Yale of the West"- is a well respected institution of learning and the town's claim to fame. The presence and influence of this university makes Oxford a worthy destination.
This small town is very well known for its character. The center of the city is adjacent to the campus and the highest point in Oxford. It is therefore referred to as "uptown" rather than "downtown". Uptown Oxford is paved with brick streets, and lined with trees, streetscape enhancement and many novelty shops and restaurants in historic small town commercial buildings. Miami University was referred to by poet Robert Frost as one of the most beautiful campus' in North America, and this reputation continues today. The entire campus is practically constructed with red brick and designed in the traditional American Georgian architectural style.
It is easy to find fun shops, good restaurants, lively bars, and an array of events hosted by the university in the picturesque setting that is Oxford. If you are in Dayton or Cincinnati, or travelling through, Oxford makes for an excellent day trip or stop.
