Winston-Salem Travel Guide

Winston-Salem is the third-largest city in North Carolina and is rich in history.  Moravians came and settled here in the 1700's and established the first women's school  in the US, Salem Academy, and later a women's college - Salem College.   The local medical school, Bowman Gray School of Medicine has one of the most prestigious cardiology departments in the country, and Wake Forst University is well-known in sports. There is also the tradition of tobacco as evident in RJ Reynolds, as well as Hanes in textiles, and Sara Lee Corporation manufactures hosiery (Hanes Hosiery and L'eggs) and knits (Hanes and Champion knitwear).  Several other great companies reside in this budding metropolis such as Northstar Travel Media, Krispy Kreme and Blue Rhino.

If you are interested in history then visit Old Salem and be sure to visit the Moravian Bakery. Winston-Salem also has a thriving arts culture and is home to Wake Forest University, Winston Salem State University and Salem College. In addition, the NC School of the Arts is located here. As a result, the downtown area has an increasing number of restaurants and art galleries.

Tanglewood Park is nearby and is nice place to spend a day with a lake, golf park, equesterian center and bike trails.  "Go Deacs!" is often heard around town b/c this local fan base is very passionate about its WFU Demon Deacons.
