Originally named Caldwell by its founder, James Caldwell, Lake George Village was first settled in 1810.

Stage coaches made regular runs to Lake George Village by 1825. Connections could be made by travelers so that they could stay in the ever increasing elegant Lake George Village hotels or proceed further up the lake by steam boat.

After the Civil War, in the Victorian age, many storied, elegant hotels were built to accommodate the ever increasing number of tourists whose every need was satisfied.   By 1896 many hotels and guest cottages in Lake George Village were advertising that their establishments were family oriented resorts at the rate of $7 to $10 per week.

Today, the Village's 933 permanent residents swells to over 15,000 in the summer months.  This is the hub of the resort area. One can walk the streets and be entertained by magicians and clowns, sit by the lake and enjoy a concert, swim or sunbathe, eat in a gourmet restaurant, or stroll with an ice cream cone or piece of pizza. Something new and exciting is happening every day, from fireworks on Thursdays, big bands on Tuesdays, to wonderful boat cruises and carriage rides every night.

You should visit the Fort William Henry, you can wander about the bastions and display areas and view French and Indian artifacts and other displays,. You can watch the classic "Last of the Mohicans" and other interesting videos... but all will agree - the best part is the guided tour through Lake George History and American development.

Come by boat, by trolley, or by car - it will be a visit to please you and your family, any season, any time.
