Things to do in Albuquerque

According to the historian Edward Gibbon, Petrarch of Rome, perhaps best known for his sonnets to the fair-haired, blue-eyed Laura, took the title of "poet laureate" in 1341 for the poem "Africa". Roughly 300 years later, in 1617 James I created the position as it’s known today for his friend and poet Ben Jonson. Although at this time the title was not official, it was only shortly afterward that the honor came to great distinction as a position of office handed down by presidents and kings alike.

Although the position and appointment have undergone minor changes over the years, one thing has never changed. The title has always been handed down by a select few. In 2009, the City of Albuquerque, Mayor Martin Chavez and Executive Director Zachary Kluckman will change the title in a very significant way - by allowing the people to pick their own laureate.

Much like the laurel itself, the idea of competitive speaking has descended through the ages to culminate in the modern world in a style of performance poetry known as slam. Slam poetry is an art that asks poets to read their works in dynamic ways, incorporating performance aesthetics into the reading so the poems become more accessible to the audience. By tapping into this performance element the newly hatched Slam Poet Laureate Program will allow the audience itself, with some input from a hand picked jury, to appoint their own laureate and artistic spokesperson.

Over the years, one of the downfalls of the laureate appointment has been the fact that often well-deserving poets who have for one reason or another been overlooked by the academic world of poetics have had no chance tat he unique honor of the laureate title. While the laureate appointed are always extremely deserving artists, this still leaves the field open to a relatively select few. Appointing this new laureate at the city level and opening it up to competition allows the city to find an artist from among its ranks who can truly represent the heritage and voice of Albuquerque.

Beginning on May 20 at the south Broadway Cultural Center and culminating on June 13 at the historic Kimo Theater downtown, this program will pit 20 of the states hottest poets from all walks and styles against one another in a pitched battle for the coveted Silver Dog-Tags. The winning laureate also wins a professionally recorded cd of their work produced by Grammy winning local sound engineer Douglas Geist, a tidy cash prize and the onor of serving as Albuquerque’s artistic spokesperson for one year. The winner will then be crowned by Mayor Martin J. Chavez on stage.

To make the position that much more sought after, the winner is not allowed to compete again the following year. The organizers hope that this will encourage the laureate to use their year wisely and responsibly.

Tickets for these events will be available at the venue box offices in late March and through Ticketmaster. If you’re in the mood for some authentic New Mexico, this annual event is one of the don’t miss events of the year!
