Sights in Albuquerque

Balloon Fiesta - Early October
James Hands
There's plenty to see and do in Albuquerque itself before you head out
to see the sights of the surrounding areas. The main drag through town
in Central Avenue, old Rt. 66. While a good portion of it is seedy, the
areas near the university (known as Nob Hill) as well as downtown are
worth seeing. There are a plethora of shops and restaurants
to keep one busy for a few hours.
If you enjoy the outdoors, it may interest you to head down to the
Bosque, the forested preserve along the Rio Grande. There are walking
trails, horse trails, biking trails, and opportunities to see a good
deal of local character.
If you're looking to see 'old' Albuquerque, you may want to
head to Old Town, which is around Central/Rio Grande. One of the oldest
neighborhoods in the city, the area has been converted from houses into
shops and restaurants, many catering mostly to tourists. Don't just
walk in any door thinking it's a shop though; some folks still live
here.

The National Atomic Museum chronicles the discovery of atomic energy,
the development of nuclear technology, and the nuclear weapons program,
and profiles the influential scientists and politicians who shaped and
utilized the world's first atomic bomb. The museum was originally
built on Kirtland Air Force Base because of Kirtland's role in the
Manhattan Project. The Museum has since moved to Mountain Road
just outside of Old Town--it's hard to miss with the missile sitting
out front. As you will learn after your visit, New Mexico is the
best place for the more..

Located in the Barelas area, the National Hispanic Cultural Center of New Mexico is the largest in this country devoted to Latino culture. Jemez State Monument is one of the Albuquerque attractions you should put on your list if you have a few hours. Located on New Mexico Route 4 in Jemez Springs, the Monument is only about 18 miles from Albuquerque. It’s a small monument, but it takes you back through the history of the Jemez people. Begin your visit in the museum, which tells of the Giusewa (“the place of boiling waters”), the original Tewa name for the region. Next, stroll through the ruins, where plaques tell of how the missionaries, who thought the Jemez people to be barbaric, sought to civilize them. more..

The Gardens are beautiful, the miniature Railroads are wonderful, and the butterfly exhibit is great; however beware of the heartless women at the ticket booth who will not sell a Train Ticket for a 2 year old accompanied by his Grandparents after 12:00 PM. They claimed too many riders while the Parking Lot was one step away from being a Ghost Town.
