Turquoise Trail

Albuquerque attractions are so varied and plentiful it’s hard to choose one over the other. But one day trip you must take if you have the time is a drive along New Mexico’s Turquoise Trail, Highway 14 accessed off Interstate 66. This national scenic byway encompasses 15,000 square miles in central New Mexico. It is so named because of the rich turquoise deposits in the area. Native Americans have been mining the gem for centuries and creating unique and beautiful jewelry with them. Stop in old mining towns such as Golden, Madrid and Cerrillos, now peppered with arts and crafts, museums, restaurants, music and theater. Don’t forget to buy some souvenirs – the area is especially festive during the Dia De Los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, celebrated on November 1st each year.
