Elko is located in northeast Nevada, west of Salt Lake City. It is home to one of the largest Basque communities in North America, so the restaurants and food are exquisite. The Ruby Mountains are just south of Elko, where you can arrange to be dropped onto a ski slope from a helicopter.
Elko started as one of three main hubs of the railroad system. Now mainly a mining town that saw a boom in the late 1980's it is home to the famed annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering every January.
The University of Nevada, now in Reno, started in Elko on what is now the Elko High School campus.
