History Bowling Green is the county seat of Pike County. It is located only 12 miles west of the Mississippi River. The first pioneer, John W. Bayse arrived in 1820. The first permanent settlement was established in 1823. Settlers were initially drawn to the area because its plentiful spring water.

The Bowling Green made steady growth. By 1876 most railroads were completed, Bowling Green college was established in 1881, and in the late 1800's quarries were opened.
