Edit ThisThe Charm City didn't get its nickname by accident. There's a lot for which Baltimore can be proud, whether it be the beauty of the Inner Harbor, the rich culture on display in Little Italy, or the laid-back vibe of Fells Point.
However, crime in downtown Baltimore is more of a problem than the local tourist commission would like to admit. Baltimore’s homicide rate has risen to seven times the national average in 2006. So, picking a safe location to stay in the city should be the traveler's first consideration.
The following three neighborhoods are great places for families, single travelers and business travelers alike while being close to the best that Baltimore has to offer.
Little Italy: In between the Harbor and Fells Point, Little Italy features some of the best Italian food west of the Atlantic. In the summer, the neighborhood comes alive with outdoor movies on Friday nights and the celebrations of the Feast of Saint Anthony and the Feast of Saint Gabriel book-ending the season.
Fells Point: Along the docks to the south of the Inner Harbor is Fells Point, which features not only some of Baltimore's most historic landmarks, but also a lively nightlife. Brown's Wharf features some nice restaurants and Broadway Pier often hosts festivals.
Inner Harbor: The revitalization of Baltimore is best symbolized by the Inner Harbor. Recently, it has become a tourist attraction filled with restaurants, stores and bars, along with great hotels and the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Inner Harbor is within walking distance of Camden Yards (home of Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles) and M and T Bank Stadium (home of the National Football League's Baltimore Ravens).
Other neighborhoods worth considering include Federal Hill (features a few museums and a great Main Street feel), Mount Vernon (Baltimore's artistic pulse) and Canton (bordered by Patterson Park, one of the country's largest urban green spaces).
Finally, a worthwhile consideration might be staying on the outside edges of town. Hotels near Baltimore-Washington International Airport give travelers easy access to both Charm City and Washington, DC to the south. Staying on the east side gives tourists a straight shot to the beautiful Chesapeake Bay.
