The main historic attraction is probably Fort Western, built by the Plymouth Company in 1754 to protect settlers from the French and Indians. It is located on the Kennebec River. Other sights include Blaine House, Capitol Park, a good Children's Discovery Museum and Maine State Library & Museum which focuses on native inhabitants and 19th century technologies. The Pine Tree State Arboretum has 224 acres with different trees - great in Fall. Belgrade Lakes is close by and is a great daytrips.
