Winfield Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and seeListed as #56 in the 1993 edition of "The 100 Best Small Towns in America," Winfield, Kansas, is a town rich in history and culture. There are just over 12,000 people who reside in Winfield, and it was once touted as having the most churches per capita. Formerly a two-college town (one of the colleges closed a few years back), it is no wonder if you look at its history of Chautauquas in the 1800's and early 1900's.
Winfield is probably most famous nowadays for the Walnut Valley Festival held in September each year. Special events include the National Bluegrass Banjo Championships, Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddle Championships, the National Hammered Dulcimer Championships, the National Guitar Flat Picking Championships, and the Walnut Valley Mandolin Championships. That weekend in September is also a good time for garage sale enthusiasts, because everyone in town has their yard sales at that time to take advantage of the flux of several thousand people who come to town for the music festival.
