Wellington is known as the "Wheat Capitol of the World" because of the amount of winter wheat raised there.  It is a town of about 8,600 people and serves as the county seat of Sumner County in southern Kansas.  It was also known as a railroad town, with Santa Fe offices on the south end of Main Street.  Wellington factories also play a large part in the production of airplane parts.

The folks in Sumner County are serious about their wheat.  The main attraction to many visitors to Wellington is the Kansas Wheat Festival which has been held as a post-harvest event every year since September 1900.  Now the festival is held for five days of events.
