Oxford Lions Club Watermelon Feed
Edit ThisThe Lions Club Watermelon Feed is a small-town event with big fun every year the first Saturday after Labor Day. Starting off the day, there is a parade. No Macy´s Parade here. This is hometown realism -- floats made on the backs of hay truck beds with lots of crepe paper and magic marker signs, children riding their bikes or marching in the band, beauty pageant winners from Oxford and nearby communities riding in the back of classic convertable automobiles. This is the fabric of the midwest.
After the parade, everyone drives or walks down to the park, where they await the first watermelon to be sliced. Then people of all ages eat watermelon all day until it is gone. Meanwhile, there is a karaoke competition and many games for the children. One of the favorites for little kids is when a truck loaded with sand backs into a fenced area and dumps the load. The sand is riddled with countless numbers of nickles, dimes and quarters, and then the search is on.
The Lions Club Watermelon Feed is not a big event by world standards. But for someone who wants to do something a little different and enjoy a genuine small-town experience, then it is the perfect recipe for summer fun.
