Day Trips
Edit ThisAdventureland
Adventureland is roughly 2 hours from Cedar Rapids. It's one of the best amusements parks in the stat--and possibly in the country. There are over 100 rides, shows and entertainment possibilities available throughout the park. Whether you're a traveler looking for thrills or family fun, this place has got what you're looking for. The thrill rides at Adventureland will drop, spin, and whirl you around making you crave more of the exciting terror. Family rides are reminiscent of carnival favorites and kiddie rides maintain perfect speeds to please the little ones. Snack shops and restaurants are conveniently placed throughout the park and all sell food at moderate prices. Admission into the park will cost $31 and children under 3 years-of-age are free. Adventureland opens daily at 10:00 a.m., but closing hours vary. Visitors should plan to spend an entire day, enter with a smile and have an exciting time.
Field of Dreams
An hour from Cedar Rapids is a cornfield where dreams come true. Built purely for movie magic, the Field of Dreams baseball diamond has drawn thousands of visitors since its creation. The field is open from April 1 through November 31 and is free. Operating hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Visitors can play a pick-up game of baseball or just enjoy the sites. Souvenirs are available. If you want to play, you will need to bring your own equipment. This day trip will take a few hours if there are many visitors, but usually the trip takes long enough to play a few innings of baseball.
Iowa's Great Lakes
Iowa has its own grouping of lakes, called Okoboji, which is similar to the of The Great Lakes. Several lakes span 3,600 acres of land and the largest is West Okoboji Lake, which is 134 feet deep. Okoboji, located about 4 hours north of Cedar Rapids, is a wonderful way to spend a day in Iowa. Cottages and resorts rim the lakes, and the lakes offer typical recreational activities such as swimming, boating and kayaking. The lakes are not the only attraction. Antiques shops and restaurants are inviting and the University of Okoboji is a "college" complete with campus bookstore (souvenir shop) and student housing (campgrounds and hotels). The "college" reflects the happy atmosphere that is projected on the lakes and the type of excitement that visitors experience.
