It offers several hundred campsites, a dam, fishing, and other activities. The types of fish range from white bass, crappie, walleye, carp, catfish, bluegill and others. It offers a sandy beach area for swimming at the main dam location. Boat rentals are available. There are 2 fairly new motels within a half mile of the swimming area. There are nature trails, an outdoor amphitheater, and an educational, interactive visitor center (hours vary). Within a couple miles of the main dam area, there is an 18-hole executive golf course and restauant (Governor's Run). Also within a half mile or so of the main dam area, you will find Dockside Inn, a unique dining experience.
Within the town itself, you will find several fast food restaurants along with Patrick's, a more traditional and higher end eating establishment. There is a Victorian house on Old Route 50 just east of the Rte. 127/Rte. 50 intersection that has been converted to a museum (hours vary).
Carlyle, Illinois, is also within 50 miles of St. Louis, Missouri, and all its attractions. You can enjoy an idyllic, rustic getaway and yet be able to enjoy the amenities of a larger city.
